I can't believe I have been living at this place for this many years and I've never been to this spot. Maybe on sleepless nights, I'd drive over to catch sunrises here again.

This post is titled Happy Chinese New Year! by author SoulJah. NIKON D300_0026__DSC6217

Happy Chinese New Year to everyone's that are celebrating. I hope the year of the Ox brings much happiness and prosperity to you and yours.

I haven't actually shot this shot at this year's CNY Eve, as I have not been active in shooting in quite a while. I have been a bit sick recently, with last week or so being the hardest hit I've ever been in a while, as I literally couldn't function on one particular day that I broke down into a terrible fever that same night.

I haven't joined the forumites at our usual haunt as of late, as I've quit smoking, and rather not have the constant temptation blowing from all directions through the night. Furthermore, haven't really joined most of the organized outings too. I think it's just a phase, and I will shake out the cobwebs soon. Lining up model shoots, organizing outings for the officemates who have recently taken up photography, doing some paid jobs, and of course, the National Day celebrations is a call to arms to all the forumites to come down and do a show of force.

Soon, I'll be back into the swing of things, and there will be a lot more new shots posted up. At the mean time, I'll post up some random photos from before that have not been featured here, and I'll intersperse that with new photos as well. As the nature of my shoots recently is leaning towards the um... shoots of... a different variety, there's not a whole lot of motivation for me to post those shots here. But if you know me, you know I'll post em on my Flickr, as some have found out, and they just keep up to date on my postings there.

Didn't manage to find the smiley back on Monday, but at least I've taken this photo on the preceding Saturday. Anyway, watch this space. I'm starting to get an interest in astrophotography, so more cool stuff soon.

This post is titled Wasai Wong Kadir pt. 1 by author SoulJah. DSC_3981 (by SoulJah)

A light drizzle greeted us from our slumber last Sunday, which was to be our biggest trekking outing for the Forum members. Doubts were cast, wondering if the rain will persist the whole day, and if the weather would clear just about enough to permit us to go nature trekking up into the hills of Wasai Wong Kadir. A quick drive over to HSBC Jerudong, where the decision to go ahead or not was to be made; quick glances on all the faces to see if any disapproval to go ahead for the drive over to Labi, somehow, we all just loaded up into the transports, and a non verbal agreement was made to decide later after the drive over the the state borders.

After the drive down to Sungai Liang to meet up with the KB chapter of our forumites, the light rain still persisted. I proclaimed I'm going up regardless, and if everyone's still up for a trek in the rain, we go ahead; and anyone who decides against it can sit it out. Almost all were in for it, seeing we just had a long drive over, might as well. After a quick prayer, we set out slowly, meandering through the slippery trails, over branches, on slippery moss covered rocks, in the light rain, with the cool surrounding air the whole time we were there.

After a good 30 minutes trek, we were greeted by the cool water of the Wasai, and some of the Forumites decide to reward themselves with a dip. Hardly anyone could resist taking even dipping their feet into the cool morning water, and under the guise of 'taking a good composition for the photo', yours truly went with tripod in hand into the water to take a couple of photos.

It was worth it.

A family enjoys the sunset atmosphere at Gadong Market by the river.

Again taken with the 20 year old lens, 105mm f/2.5. Part and parcel why I chose to shoot Nikon was the extensive number of old lenses that can be mounted on new digital bodies. A heritage stretching back to the first of Nikon's SLRs, the F mount has not seen any radical changes over the years. At a minimum, any old lens, save a few exotic ones, can be mounted onto any later model cameras. While there's the Pentax K mount, which can still be mounted on later day model Pentax cameras, or Minolta lenses that can be mounted on the later day Minolta, and by extension, Sony DSLRs, there's no denying that Nikon lenses are still prized today as they were decades ago, so there's still a large market of used lenses still available, and the ease to find these gems are getting ridiculous, with the Internet connecting everyone, everywhere. I got this baby in fact from Malaysia, but any number of eBay shops still carry this.

So go out, go to your pawn shops, go check the display cases of your local camera store. They might have a gem in the rough.

I find that, in a pinch, my manual focus, Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 ais, does a wonderful job as a stand in for my 70-200mm. I think I'm beginning to get a hang of this lens, and seeing it's almost as tiny as my 50mm, I think it'll go along with me the next time I go to KL again. I'm planning on sitting in a corner of Bukit Bintang, snapping away, as I rarely got the chance to do so the last time I was in KL.

I've been pretty much out of sync with my shooting lately, and someone suggested going full on manual for the time being to root out the cobwebs outta my head. While I might not go full blown Hasselblad-ing Bukit Bintang, the wonderful clarity and sharpness of this 20 year old lens might just give my other lenses a bit of jealousy fit. I mean, with an optical formula dating back to 50 years, why mess with a good thing, right?

I'm gonna post just the photos I took from my first morning in KL which I did a bit of sightseeing, going around to KL Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers. Lovely people, lovely sights, lovely nightlife. In short, I had an awesome time shooting and exploring that city, which I can safely say, that never sleeps.

If you people know the reason I went there, you know how to get to my Flickr and check out the stuff I took. Definitely not gonna post it here.

This post is titled Wow... I won... by author SoulJah. KHAIRUL_NIZAM_entry_3 (by SoulJah)

This won me first prize for the local youth competition! And I'll be going to Singapore to the Asean + 3 Youth Festival representing Brunei with this photo! Awesome! Theme of the shoot for that day was Global Warming.

Caption: A monitor lizard inspects an intruder to his habitat.

Description: The use of water bottles has exploded in recent years due to the convenience of having bottled water at the ready for daily use. Numerous companies in Brunei have wholeheartedly embraced this growth market and introduce their own brands of bottled water. The bottles are actually recyclable, but either due to public indifference, or ignorance, the water bottles are unceremoniously discarded. If it doesn’t pose a direct threat to wildlife, an indirect effect of that would be global warming due to the increasing use of hydrocarbons to produce the PET bottles; it has been noted that recycling plastic material amounts to a saving of more than 50% than producing the bottles from their source materials.

Bandar Seri Begawan - A prize presentation ceremony for winners of the recent photography competition which carried the theme 'Global Warming' was held yesterday at the Youth Centre in the capital.

The competition was organised by the Youth and Sports Department in cooperation with Brunei Darussalam Photographic Society.

Present as the guest of honour was Haji Mohd Zali bin Haji Arshad, the Assistant Head of Youth and Sports Officer.

The ceremony began with the recital of Surah alFatihah led by Ustaz Suprapto bin Komari followed by a brief speech from the Head Judge of the Brunei Darussalam Photographic Society, Haji Mohd Yusof bin bin Haji Mohd Yassin.

The top five winners were announced during the ceremony followed by the handing over of certificates of appreciation to all participants.

Mohd Khairul Nizam bin Haji Abd Rahman was adjudged as the winner while Mohammad Taufiq bin Yakub came second. In third place was Mohamad Mahadzir Iskandar bin Zakaria followed by Dyg Hazimah binti Abd Hamid and Haji Abdul Azim @ Haj Mu'az bin Haji Tujoh.

The winner will be representing Brunei Darussalam for the "ASEAN+3 Youth Festival Photography Competition" in Singapore from July 28 to Aug 3. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
