New Symbian OS Trojan Found

Yet another new trojan, which has been dubbed MGDropper (also being called METAL Gear.a by some) , has been found for Series60 phones. The virus, which is disguised as a Series60 version of the game Metal Gear Solid, is particulary nasty as it disables anti-virus software before it starts to infect your mobile and those around you.

The way the trojan works is that when the METAL Gear.sis file is installed on the mobile, the virus disables specified anti-virus software on the phone, as well as all file explorers and various other applications. It then installs Cabir.G, a variant of the Sulls Trojan. Once Cabir.G has infected the phone, it uses Bluetooth to look for other phones to infect. When a suitable phone is found, the virus sends it a file called SEXXXY.sis. If the target user accepts the file, the virus will diable the "select" button on that mobile.

So far no anti-virus company has issued removal instructions for this new trojan but Symworks have released a new verion of their Series60 Anti-virus Software that can deal with this new problem. F-Secure have also posted some information about new malware that has been circulating recently. They list Skulls.C, Cabir.F and Cabir.G as the latest threats discovered this Tuesday alone. They also said that MGDropper can't disable their Anti-Virus Program (unlike others) and shouldn't be a problem for users who have F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus Installed.

I'm sitting here with my laptop on the coffee table and watching CNN and BBC, and news starts pouring in about thousands of people losing their lives from Tsunamis that hit Asian countries less than 24 hours ago. Images of people being swept away by the on rushing wall of tidal waves and people finding bodies young and old among the debris and rubble are flashed across the screen. A real tragedy this.

This post is titled Robbers steal millions from Irish bank by author SoulJah.
Robbers have stolen millions of pounds from a bank in the centre of Northern Ireland's capital Belfast after holding two employees hostage.

The raiders went into a branch of the Australian-owned Northern Bank on Wellington Street after holding two members of staff hostage in their homes.

As detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's (PSNI) new Crime Operations Department launched a major investigation, security sources disclosed the scale of the theft.

One confirmed millions had been taken from the vaults.

"Detectives are investigating the removal of asubstantial amount of cash from a bank in the Belfast area," a PSNI spokeswoman said.

On its website (wwWnbonline.co.uk), the Northern Bank says it is "the largest retail bank in Northern Ireland with a network of 95 branches and 11 business banking centres".

Founded in 1824, it is part of the National Australia Bank group.

Last Tuesday, National Australia Bank announced it had reached an agreement to sell the Northern Bank to the Danske Bank Group of Denmark.

Police were first alerted to the robbery at around 11.45pm last night (1034 AEDT Tuesday).

It is believed members of the gang took over the homes of senior officials from the bank.

The crime operations team headed up by Assistant Chief Constable Sam Kinkaid was immediately called in.

Its officers specialise in investigating serious andorganised crime.

Democratic Unionist Policing Board member Ian Paisley Jnr said the robbery underlined the mafia-style culture operating in Northern Ireland.

"This appears to be another very serious crime in Northern Ireland," the North Antrim Assembly member said.

"Although we do not have specific details about the amount of money taken, we do know that there is more than one scene of crime and that several families have been held hostage during this criminal operation.

"The police as yet have not been able to say whether there is paramilitary or non-paramilitary involvement.

"However this indicates the kind of mafia society we live in in Northern Ireland.

"It is illustrated by the fact that a criminal gang can carry out such an audacious raid like this."

This post is titled File-Swap Site Folds for Good by author SoulJah.
NEW YORK -- One of the web's most popular file-sharing sites has shut down less than a week after Hollywood announced a flurry of lawsuits against operators of such internet servers.

A note posted on Suprnova.org, which facilitated sharing among users of the BitTorrent program, said the site was "closing down for good." The collection of links to downloadable files, including music, movies and books, was taken down.

"We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything," the statement said.

Reached via Suprnova.org's chat room, the site's anonymous operator refused to comment on why it had shut down.

Last week, movie studios sued more than 100 operators of U.S. and European sites that host BitTorrent links but did not name the defendants.

Suprnova.org was the most popular repository for links to files that could be downloaded using the BitTorrent program.

Another site that carried BitTorrent links, N4p.com, said it had shut down due to a civil complaint that cited the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Torrentbits.org and Phoenix-torrents.com also shut down.

Still, there were plenty of sites with BitTorrent links alive Monday, including a "mirror," or copy, of Suprnova.org.

BitTorrent has grown quickly in popularity this year, and now accounts for more than a third of all traffic on the internet, according to research company CacheLogic.

The program owes its popularity in part to its immunity to industry attempts to confound it with bogus decoy files, which have swamped some other networks. BitTorrent also allows for efficient and speedy downloads.

The Motion Picture Association of America last week said it is planning similar action against operators of servers that direct data for the Direct Connect and eDonkey file-swapping services.

A sad day indeed. RIP SuprNova. Sleep well young prince. Almost as sad as when Goatse.cx domain died. What's next? Torrentreactor? The Pirate Bay? Me? How would I live? I still have my precious source.

Oyoyo Headphones
Oyoyo Headphones,
originally uploaded by SoulJah.
The best damned headphones I've ever had... Well, apart from my other Altec Lansing headphone, but that's beside the point. While other headphones struggle to make some decent amplitude, these babies pump bass down my ear hole and jam their feet in and won't let my ear drums up. The bass, the trebles, the sound clarity, oh I'm in love <3

So the story? Got my Nokia 6230 which I've been eyeing for so long right, coz it has mp3 playing capability natively, so, me being a music nut can't help but have this thing stuck in my head all day long. So when I got it, I was kinda disappointed with the silly headset that has those "oh-shit-did-i-snapped-the-wires-clean-off" feeling to the wires leading up to the earpiece. They're so fiddly and pretty unconvincing in it's strength to stay on there. And they're a bitch to put on, having to wrap the wires around my neck etc. And they hurt the dickens when they're in for too long.

So when I found out about this http://www.globetown.net/~nokia40a/earphone/ which I eagerly proceed to look for solderers everywhere that can do this kind of things but all of em were complete wusses when it comes to doing work on a $25 item.

So I got my Filipino friend to work on it and after a couple of revisions, got it to work nicely. So today, I just got me some of these Oyoyo headsets, and lemme tell ya, even if it looks fiddly, this thing packs maximum punch because of Neodynium (yeah, it sounds like some metal that gets inserted into a mutants body all over) drivers. If you want to test out these puppies, just ask and your head shall therefore be blowneth off.

This post is titled Mobiado: Designer Phone For Gadget Freaks by author SoulJah.

Nokia already has an exclusive line of designer phones called Vertu, they’ll run you a thick knot, but you aren’t paying for cutting edge features, instead the money is an investment in elegant design and expensive materials—oh, and access to the Vertu concierge service to do everything for you in lieu of fancy technologies.

The Mobiado tries to fill the gap between feature packed phones and designer phones. The materials aren’t as exlusive as the Vertu’s nor is the design as sexy (it looks like ball bearings dropped on block of aluminum, which is basically exactly what it is). However the Mobiado has all the latest features like Bluetooth, a VGA camera, video, EDGE, and Nokia’s series 40 v 2 interface. Hey wait a second, that sounds just like a Nokia 6230. In fact, if you look at where all the buttons and the camera are placed, the Mobiado is a Nokia 6230 inside a shiny metal case.

So what sort of luxury features does $1200 buy you? A machined aluminum case with stainless steel buttons and Acrylite (a form of Lexan) lens. In other words, a phone that will stick to your face like a lamp pole if you use it this winter. The one real bonus Mobiado adds over the 6230 is two LED assist lamps for the digital camera. Are two LEDs and an aluminum body worth $850 we’d have to say no. In fact we’d say you’re better off spending your hard earned cash on a 6230 and commissioning a fabricator to build a much nicer metal or carbon fibre or some such fancy material cover and faceplate. You’ll have something nicer and still probably spend less than half of what a Mobiado would run you.

Right, then... Anyone knows of a good carbon fibre fabricator then?

This post is titled Doom Movie Update by author SoulJah.
The Petition Update

As a result of the recent events surrounding the Doom movie, MegaGames has been informed of an online petition designed to bring awareness to the producers of the DooM Movie that the DooM community is not at all happy with the supposed changes. In that respect, the letter by Dave Callaham, DooM movie scriptwriter, published yesterday served more as a confirmation of those changes rather than as any form of an attempt to appease fans.

The petition has already managed to gather almost 2000 signatures and fans seem to be determined to do whatever is possible to get their message through. If you wish to sign or view the petition follow the download tab above. For those of you who are not certain about what all the noise is about, below is a list of possible DooM movie changes as listed by the petition.

a)Taking place on an unknown planet. (ie: No Mars) What was so hard about the location of this movie? Doom takes place on Mars, yet the movie does not. As far as movie sets go, one planet looks the same as the other, so there's simply no excuse to leave this out.

b) Having nothing to do with Hell, instead having the monsters and zombies origin being the result of a virus. This completely undermines the point of the game entirely, the Doom pivotal plot point is that Hell invades, without it the movie is not Doom and can't even pretend to be Doom. Rather it's just a rehash of a tired sci-fi cliche with the Doom name for a title. If we wanted to see a simple horror-sci-fi movie, we'd watch Event Horizon.

c) Supposedly involving S.W.A.T. Team members instead of Space Marines. As stated before, something so simple as what the name of the uniformed soldiers in the movie didn't even try hold continuity. There's no reason or purpose to change Space Marines, which is Doom's staple, to something different. It's just bad taste and bad scripting.

d) Having no UAC (Union Aerospace Commission) involved in the movie. Though unconfirmed, this would be another key element of the Doom saga left out.

e) Several minor issues, such as the BFG (Big F***ing Gun) now renamed to Bio Force Gun. As well as all the great DooM Hellspawn such as the Pinky Demon, the Baron of Hell and several others being played by Human characters, and given uncreative names like "Pinky" and "Goat" and "Baron." This is not only uncreative, but rather creating a movie without the Doom plotline and letting it stand "as-is", this movie makes deliberate nods and references to the game, like it's trying so hard to be true to the game, but falls short because the plot has nothing to do with the game at all. Why even bother calling the personnel by gimmicky little nicknames so we can tell what they'll mutate to? Again, just bad scripting and character casting.

Petition: http://www.dmop.co.nr/

Well? What the fuck are you waiting for? Sign that fucking petition! No?

Well maybe this snivelling scriptwriters' open letter to the fans will change your minds.

Open Letter to Doom Fans

Dear Doom Fans:

Sometime in the last week or two, there was quite an uproar over a quote I allegedly made regarding my bravado in completely disfiguring the plot of the Doom games when I went about writing the screenplay for the film. First and foremost, allow me to state that I never made that quote. The reporting news source reported that I made that quote during an open press visit to the Doom set in Prague, during a week in which I was in fact in Los Angeles. Additionally, I want to add that I would never under any circumstances address either the press or the Doom fans with anything resembling the snide elitism that I perceive that quote to connote. In these regards, I consider the journalism involved to be nothing less than shoddy and irresponsible.

That said.

The screenplay I wrote DOES differ in a number of ways from the games. I want to be very honest and forthcoming in saying that, and I know that I won't make any friends amongst the fans of the game in doing so. But it should be mentioned that it was never the goal of anyone involved in this film, from myself and the producers to the studio to the guys at id, to make a direct film adaptation of the game(s). The thought process has always been to create an extension of the Doom universe that will give fans an interesting new take on the themes that they've come to enjoy in the game. Because let's be honest here: as far as a completely immersive and cinematic experience, we were never going to top Doom 3 anyway, and we all knew that. Instead, we have toyed with some elements of the game, and yes, I am pretty much solely responsible for that, since it was my pitch and my screenplay that got made. Let me assure you, though, that the themes and elements that you love about Doom are ALL represented strongly in the film...just with some new twists.

I've found it frustrating that I somehow became the goat for the perceived shortcomings of the film, because (and I say this with no humility whatsoever, because I'm not a humble person), that I am, without a doubt, the greatest ally the Doom fan has had during the entire process of the film being made. I am the only person involved creatively who has ever made any attempt to open discourse with the game's internet fanbase, and I am the only person involved who has continually kept the ideals of the game first and foremost in mind. I very truthfully believe that my unapologetic and hyper-violent script would have been a Doom fan's movie dream come true. However, since my involvement, the film has steadily moved away from the realm of fandom and more toward the realm of traditional Hollywood interests. It's not been ideal, in my opinion, but I did what I could when I could, and I stand by that work.

No film adaptation can ever match the expectations of the original fans, and the Doom movie will be no different. You as fans each have your own perfect version of the Doom film already shot in your head, and those versions aren't always what the guy next to you would want to see in the same movie (someone out there on doomworld.com sure loved the idea of Howie Long as Doomguy -- which is perfect aesthetically, but let's face it, totally absurd if you want this movie to come out in theatres). I myself have a perfect version of the Doom movie all played out in my head--I even wrote it down--and it's not getting made either. And I'm not always real happy about it, but I do understand that that is the nature of the Hollywood machine. The bottom line is there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of good people working their asses off on this movie right now, and you, just like me, have to trust them to do the best job they can. I don't enjoy watching a bunch of strangers bastardize my baby any more than you do, but really none of us can do anything about it at this point, so I hope that at least some of you will fret, with me, in the direction of optimism. We all have high expectations, and a lot of them won't be met, but the bottom line is the movie is going to be pretty cool.

Finally, to the fan that suggested I get an enema (ostensibly to clean out my head, I think): That was awesome.

This post is titled Check this out yo! by author SoulJah. Wrote this in to Borneo Bulletin on 8th December, 2004.

Deathtrap at the Mentiri roundabout
I'm writing to voice out my concern over the relatively dangerous conditions at the Mentiri round about which was completed last year.

While this round about has greatly facilitated easier travel to Bandar or Gadong from Mentiri and the surrounding areas, the roundabout has seen some major accidents, some of them fatal, for the past few months. Just last year, a day before the Hari Raya celebrations, an elderly man and his family met with a fatal accident.

The roundabout is set up in a precarious arrangement. The road approaching the roundabout is 30 degrees incline down the hill at the end of which is the roundabout.

To the left as we approach the roundabout, there is a guard railing made of stainless steel that you see everyday on the side of the road. These are proven effective in preventing cars from being thrown to the sides into ditches or drains. But the dangerous aspect of this is that at the end of this guardrail is a pathway with handrails for pedestrians.

Not that there's anything wrong with having handrails for pedestrians, it's just that if a car loses control going down hill towards the roundabout, the majority of cars will swerve hard to the left to avoid the roundabout and hit the guardrail. But the consequence of this would be that right in front of them is the handrail, which would act like a knife cutting into a car.

One car too many has met their demise here, while some of their occupants were plain lucky to even get out alive. I suggest the relevant authorities re-plan the arrangement of the 'safety' item near the roundabout, like removing the hand rails altogether seeing that the pathway on that side is rarely used, or installing a more effective device, like using water-filled plastic barrels or barriers commonly used on American highways. These will minimise the impact force of a collision as the water will absorb most of the force and disperse it as harmlessly as water will ever be.

We really need the relevant authorities to look into this. How many more lives need to be lost before we can do something to prevent it?

This post is titled In sworn affidavit, programmer says he developed vote-rigging prototype for Florida congressman; Congressman’s office silent by author SoulJah.
By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

In a sworn affidavit (pdf file) Monday, a former programmer for a NASA contractor said that he developed a vote-rigging prototype at the request of a then-Florida state representative who is now a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

RAW STORY acquired the affidavit from The Brad Blog, which has been in contact with the programmer in Washington.

While working for Yang Enterprises in Florida, the 46-year-old programmer says he was instructed by then-Republican state representative Tom Feeney to "develop a prototype of a voting program that could alter the vote tabulation in the election and be undetectable."

Feeney, a former failed running mate of Gov. Jeb Bush, now represents Florida's 24th district in the House of Representatives. At the time, he was serving both as general counsel and lobbyist for Yang Enterprises and the Florida state congressman.

Feeney's office in Orlando told RAW STORY they would check with the congressman and hoped to provide comment later today. A second call was placed this afternoon; the congressman's press secretary was said to be "unavailable."

A receptionist at Yang Enterprises said she would pass a message along to a vice president, who she said would return the call.

"They will give you a comment," she said.

The programmer, Clinton Curtis, said that he was told the program needed to be "touch-screen capable, the user should be able to trigger the program without any additional equipment, [and that] the programming was to remain hidden even if the source code was inspected."

Curtis asserts that he told Feeney it would be nearly impossible to write a code to change the voting results if anyone were able to view the source code.

"However," he added, "if the code were compiled before anyone was allowed to review it then any vote fraud would remain invisible to detection."

Nevertheless, he says that he was asked at the meeting by Yang to build the prototype anyway.

Curtis states he initially believed that Feeney's sought to stop Democrats from using such a program and "wanted to be able to detect and prevent that if it occurred."

It was not until after the prototype was delivered that he says he got wind of its possible, more nefarious usage.

According to his affidavit, Yang, his employer, later informed him that the software might be used to "control the vote in South Florida." He says that he would never have developed the software had he known its alleged ultimate purpose.

Curtis details his claims on the fraud program in the affidavit:

In the vote fraud prototype that I created things are not what they seem. Hidden on the screen are invisible buttons. A person with knowledge of the locations of those invisible buttons can then use them to alter the votes of everyone before them. By clicking the correct order of invisible buttons the candidate selected by the user is compared to other candidates within that same race. If the candidate they selected is leading the race nothing happens. If the other candidate is leading the race the vote totals are altered so that the selected candidate is now leading the race with 51% of the vote. The other candidates then share the remaining 49% in exact proportion to the totals they had previously. In the prototype supplied to Feeney the vote totals show on the screen. In an actual application the user would receive no visible clues to the fraud that had just occurred. Since the vote is applied by race, any single race or multiple races can be altered. The supervisors or any other voter would never notice this fraud since no visible sign would appear. Additionally, the procedure could be repeated as many times as was necessary to achieve the desired results. No amount of testing or simulations would expose the fraud as its activation and process is completely invisible to everyone except the person programming the vote fraud routine.

The same procedure could be automated to activate without any user intervention whenever the machine detects a certain pattern of voting. The algorithm could also be altered from hidden keys or triggers that would allow the fraudulent user to manipulate both the margins and percentages of any particular race. In most national elections it is not necessary to win every area.

Yang Enterprises is currently under investigation by the FBI. Curtis has filed a suit with the state alleging the the firm also overbilled the state on
another contract, and his report of an illegal alien resulted in the arrest of a Chinese national in March who is accused of sending information on radar guidance chips for the U.S. Hellfire missile to China.

Curtis' affidavit has been turned over to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee for further investigation.

More details on this story are available at The Brad Blog. Further updates will be available at RAW STORY later tonight.

This post is titled Oh pray tell the iPod thing will have it's backlash soon... by author SoulJah. There ya go. Apple has absolutely taken over the mp3 player world. By releasing hordes of BND$900 hard disk mp3 players... that doesn't do anything else quite spectacular. Photo viewing? Whooptedoo? And that's what you call innovation?

It's not just me that's really bugged with the thing, open any respectable PC or gadget mag/site, and they're slowly beginning to get control of their mind once more, getting it back from Darth Jobs. The status symbol of the iPod and it's tell tale white earbuds has been lost. Everyone has one. It's not special anymore.

To me, it was never THAT special. I'm much more impressed with Archos who has been churning out solid video players for a while now that you can hook up to your tube and get some DivX goodness. Bam! Bam!

iPod photo viewing? I CAN EVEN DO THAT ON MY PHONE!

Unless they come out with a DivX based iPod (OH MY GOD NOT THOSE GODAWFUL MOV FILES!), I see no reason why anyone tech savvy enough to get an iPod. Unless you want to be sheep. And unoriginal. The 17th person in a room to have tell tale white iPod earbuds (What's up with that whole white ear buds anyway? "Oh look I got one!" "Steal it from me!")

There's countless other mp3 players that will match up the iPod in terms of specs, hell even surpassing it in some aspects. Me? I'll just do my PHOTO VIEWING on my phone, while PLAYING MP3s and oh... I CAN WATCH VIDEOS! Even though it's in 3gp format, at least I CAN WATCH SOME.

This post is titled Malaysian diva charged with defaming young rival by author SoulJah.
KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia was agog on Thursday with the news that a veteran diva had been charged in court with defaming a young pop princess who dethroned her as the country's most popular singer.

The scandal involving ageing icon Sharifah Aini Syed Jaafar, 51, and pretty popster Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin, 25, was splashed on the front pages of all the normally straight-laced major newspapers.

Pictures of a beaming and perfectly coiffured Sharifah Aini on her way to court ended months of speculation over the case, which centres on the origin of emails disparaging Nurhaliza which were sent to entertainment journalists and later widely disseminated.

They alleged that Nurhaliza, known for her clean-cut girl-next-door image, had artificially enhanced her beauty and indulged in sex romps.

Sharifah Aini pleaded not guilty to the charge of defamation and was released on 4,000 ringgit (US$1,050) bail. If convicted, she could be fined or jailed for up to two years.

Sharifah Aini started singing at the age of seven and released at least 77 albums throughout her 35-year career.

Siti Nurhaliza shot to fame in recent years, garnering legions of adoring fans in Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore. - AFP

This post is titled Inflatable SpongeBob Characters Disappearing From Burger Kings by author SoulJah.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There is a nationwide rash of thefts of 9-foot-tall and 9-foot-wide SpongeBob SquarePants inflatables propped on the roofs of Burger Kings.

More than 50 SpongeBob-nappings have been reported from Florida to Utah since the pop icon started appearing on fast-food restaurant rooftops in a promotional tie-in with his movie Nov. 11. Employees at a Burger King near Palatka are among the latest to report the theft of the $500 balloon last weekend.

"We don't have any theories. SpongeBob SquarePants is kind of a fad. It could be a childhood prank or an adult trying to get a fad item for Christmas," Putnam County sheriff's Lt. Steve Rose said Wednesday. "If any leads come across, we will follow up in hopes of making an arrest."

As part of the promotion, 4,704 inflatable SpongeBobs weighing 50 pounds were ordered for restaurants nationwide, said a Burger King company spokesman. The animated movie and TV star brought to you by Nickelodeon is featured on Burger King children's meals, watches and toys.

The bigger-than-life sized versions of "The SpongeBob Square Pants Movie" star seem to have turned up on eBay, selling for as much as $1,000.

The use of SpongeBob SquarePants is aimed at young males, which is "the hardest market to get to," said Jim Twitchell, a professor of advertising and English at the University of Florida.

"SpongeBob is an idea character. He's not just a kiddie character. He's a transcendent icon, and the fact that he works in a fast-food place is even better," he said.

Twitchell suspects young men are behind most thefts of the famous Krabby Patty flipper.

"From a marketing point of view, stealing generates value," he said. "They will show up in fraternity houses for sure."

Burger King is not actively pursuing the missing inflatables, said a Burger King spokesman, who refused to be identified.

"At the moment, it is sort of a very amusing phenomenon. We hope it is just a prank, and the SpongeBobs come back."

Miami-based Burger King Corp. has 7,956 stores in the United States, and about 7,000 participated in the promotion. Not all of them ordered balloons.
