Wanted to try out something with the 14mm and F60 film camera, but wanted to take some test shots to see the shutter speed and aperture matches. Yeah, I use my 2k DSLR as a light meter. Coz the 14mm won't meter and focus on the F60. Hey, you gotta use what you have.

Mix and Match.

Reeda invited a bunch of the shutterbugs over for some light food, some light drinks, and some heavy, heavy laughter. Present: Me, RezaFaizal and missus, UcingItam and significant other, Jim747, Rano, Airbiscuit, CPS and missus, God's Gift, Nikonian, Ber, Ahim and the host Reeda and the missus. A whole slew of topics were put on the table, alongside the cameras, lenses, flashes, and various bits and bobs.

This post is titled Chasing Sunsets by author SoulJah. 0001_DSC_0149

I was heading out to meet the guys up at the Arch to go to Rano's open house later that night, and over the hills, up through a man made valley which was carved out for the 4 lane motorway, was this glorious, deep orange sunset, with slivers of silhouettes being thrown out against the trees and whatnot. Right at that moment I knew I wanted to take a picture of it, but problem was there was nowhere to shoot it without needing to go out, which, in retrospect, I should have done to do the shot proper, with tripod and all.

Anyway, I remembered a spot right infront of a newly finished (on the exterior at least) RTB building which has a large open space right in front of it, and there was a bit of road shoulder area which I could just stop and shoot out the window. So I gunned the accelerator, keeping an eye on the sunset, not wanting any glimmer of its glorious colors fading.

I've been meaning to shoot from there, and finally it's fulfilled. I just hope the building opens soon, so I can park within the compounds and not worry about traffice sideswipping me, my car or my lens.

This post is titled Sheraton Utama Hotel's Tamu Sungkai Buffet by the Poolside by author SoulJah. 0003_DSC_0005
Lamb Roasted on a Spit.

A group of bloggers were invited for a session of breaking of fast with the staff of Sheraton and the new General Manager, Mr. Alex Riva. We were greeted at the lobby by... Ok, I have to confess I somehow misplaced all the Business Cards that was handed to me, even though I remembered to put it in my memory card wallet. And I'm rather terrible with names. But they did greet us at the lobby and ushered us all to our tables.

Rano invited me, Jim747 and Airbiscuit the night before for this, and we all gladly came. We met Reeda and Yeeman there. Though there was supposed to be a few more from the blogosphere, but it was in all six of us having a delightful night of great company and great food.

The Pickles and Acar spread.
0009_DSC_0012Rano at the Noodles Station.

I got some photography stuff out of the way first before heading to the food stations, but that lamb roast on a spit was enticing me to say the least. After some photos and some long exposure shots, I was ready for the food. On my first 'round', I had some rice, veggies with prawns, some satay, and my main target for the night, the roast lamb. Let me tell ya, the nice and tender meat was a delight. Most of the grilled lamb chops I had all this time was quite the opposite. Even the roast at Rizqun I had a hard time to bite with my old man chompers, but last night's at Sheraton was really, really, delectable. It was so enticing that I digged in without even taking a picture. It was that good.

We chatted for a bit with our two hosts that sat with us on a separate table, and found out that they have done the breaking of fast sessions with other traditional media outlets, such as Radio DJs and Newspaper reporters and editors.

I had to remind myself that I needed to take a picture of the food items for Yeeman so I got up to get a second serving, thoughtfully, but futilely arranging the items so it'd look great on a photo. Fried noodles with satay and pratas and some more roast lamb.

Playing with wireless CLS again with my food, flashing the white tent to give a nice, even, soft lighting to light up the food.

My third serving was some noodles with all the condiments dipped in what I thought was Laksa curry, but turns out it was a thick Tom Yam soup. Thank goodness I tried it, as it was the best Tom Yam I had in months.

My third.

There's no better way to end a good dinner than with a dessert. After Reeda exclaimed it was dessert time, we found our way inside for the dessert table, and I proceeded to snap up some pictures. But once I found the Chocolate Ice Cream Pit, and the accompanying Chocolate Rice Sprinkles beside it, off the camera went, and back to my seat I go, with Ice Cream bowl in hand.

Teh Tarik and Chocolate Ice Cream goes great hand as I've found out.

It was a great night, with great company, and not to mention to two lovely ladies with us at our table. And I find the poolside setting only manages to calm my nerves and help me relax some more. And it was not too rushed anyway, and the crowd was not all that much. Great place to have your dinner, Sungkai or not. I totally recommend it.

Man, that VR system sure is awesome. Taken with the 70-200mm f/2.8G. Without VR this woulda been blur city.

Went to this Thai restaurant on the same block as HSBC in Jerudong. Aqil Shafiee Restaurant I believe the name was. It wasn't a buffet, more like ala carte. Certainly there were a few dishes that was quite popular, meaning there were a couple of dishes that other tables had that was the same as the dishes on our table. Cashew Nut Chicken, Tempura Prawn? Or was it just deep fried prawns. Tom Yam Prawns. Pineapple Fried Rice. Mango Fish (this deep fried fish cooked Thai style with Mango bits. My favourite of the bunch) with Kailan as the vegetable dish. Tanghoon Salad, which I gave a miss because they said it was too hot. That basically rounds off everything we had on the table. The food was great, and the atmosphere was relaxed, as there were no rush to the buffet table.

You know what? I'd rather like that format. I might try to go ala carte for all my Ramadhan dining pleasures next year. Might have to compile a list though.

Rizqun had the most number of tables I've seen this Ramadhan season. This table was one out of hundreds within the vicinity of the hotel lobby.

0016_DSC_0063
Reminded him to keep still, but as you can see, he wouldn't.

0040_DSC_0195
Fadil, deep in thought.

In all, I really like the variety of food they have at the buffet lines. In fact, they had two buffet lines to cater to the number of patrons. I would say the crowd at iLotus was thicker than this, but if one line's busy, you can just go to the other line anyway. The Mutton was scrumptulicious, and we have no less than two prawn dishes, and all of the stuff get refilled pretty quickly. And the thing I liked about Rizqun is that they have a Roti Canai/Murtabak station as part of their morning breakfast buffet, and now they have it as a regular station at the Ramadhan buffet. The two drinks area get frequented fairly regularly, but refills comes swiftly whenever it runs out.

One of the better dining destinations out there for your Ramadhan food fix.

This post is titled Youths lucky witnesses of national progress by author SoulJah.

Syed Rory Malai Hassan
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Friday, October 5, 2007

A LARGE segment of the Bruneian population may not have yet been born during His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's accession to the throne 40 years ago, but The Brunei Times had no trouble finding youths who can appreciate their monarch's good work in raising the nation.

Royal Brunei Airlines employee Mohd Abd Hakim Abd Rahim feels that, as the longest-ruling working monarch in the world, His Majesty has brought about a lot of positive transformations in development for the country during his reign.

"In terms of economic development, the sultan has made the country more approachable and friendly for foreign investors which may bring about even more positive changes for the country," he said.

Rozaimi Johari, an economics teacher from Masin Secondary School, said that over the past 30 years of his own life, there have been substantial improvements which has propelled Brunei on to the international stage.

Haryatie Mohd Antin, who reads Brunei Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, said: "We are very proud to have such a caring working monarch who has successfully steered the nation's development towards greater heights in terms of education, health, economy and welfare."

"Our development - even though it may sometimes be misinterpreted as slow - is actually our way of practicing a safe and cautious policy," she added.

Nizam Rahman, an IT technician from the State Store said that as a citizen of Brunei he is very proud to have such a caring monarch who looks after the welfare of his people and considers the nation close to his heart.

"If his father, the late Sultan Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien was known as the Modern Architect of the nation, then His Majesty should be considered as the visionary leader who has successfully brought the nation on par with other countries, on an international level," he said.

"As a royal statesman, the sultan has introduced to the international stage a glimpse of the nation's people.

"His management of the preparations made by his late father which he successfully expanded and made as his own is very impressive and shows that he cares quite a lot for the development and progress of his country and nation's people."

0006_DSC_0041

The lads wanted to hang out last night at the Arch, so after much contemplation I decided against bringing the 50mm f/1.4 and just stick on the Sigma 14mm f/3.5 and figured I just either shoot at ISO1600 or just do some really trick long exposures.

Fandi got ahold of it and started playing around with it, manual focusing and all. Let me tell ya, I was so proud at that moment, much akin to a mother duck teaching a duckling how to swim.

Anyway, I guess I'd better get used to this $700 mistake, and by the looks of it, it might come along with me on solitary long exposure night outings now. This thing is not at all bad at night time.

I like how it keeps the columns relatively straight, and not go fisheye on me.
